October 30, 2010
October 30th was the anniversary of Parker's death and due date. Yesterday was great! That sounded funny. We had lots of phone calls, cards and prayers (I know it cause I felt them). I can't believe how many people remembered us yesterday. We really appreciate every ones support. We continue to be very blessed with a wonderful support group. You are all so amazing!!! :)
Things are going well at our house. We are still looking for a farm. We put another offer in on a piece of property on Friday. We should hear back on Monday. This time it's 109+ acres. This one scares me more than the last one, because the house is a tare down. If we find out that they accept our offer on Monday, I just might panic!!! We sure do like to take risks. I will be in a double wide before I know it. I love you Lance!
I am in my third week back to school. I am still trying to get in the swing of things. It is so hard! I just feel like I am so dumb. I have to read things over three to four times to understand what the heck they're talking about. I know I will get through it, it just might be painful!
Halloween was fantastic. Erin, Reuben and the boys were able to come over and spend the day with us, which was wonderful. Lance and Reuben were able to play a little golf. Me, Erin and all the kids got to play. We were able to hike through the woods and along the creek before it was time to come inside and get ready for Halloween.
Yesterday was a good day!

Good Sam Memorial Service - Sunday, October 17th
Sunday Lance and I were given the opportunity to speak at Good Samaritan's Memorial Service to honor all of the babies that have passed. Although it was tough preparing for our speech we felt as if it was an absolute honor to share our story with others that have had similar experiences. Below you will find our notes from our speech. My Parents, My Sister (Erin), My Brother (Jared) and his wife (Megan) and also Lance's Mother came to support us.
(Lindsey)
My name is Lindsey Ringhand. My husband Lance and I have two girls and a boy. Laney is 6 years old; Samantha is almost 5, and Parker our son passed away on October 30th of last year.
I would first like to give a background on my pregnancy. Then Lance and I will take turns sharing some of our postings from our family blog. We will conclude with how our family is doing today at the anniversary of Parker’s death.
My Pregnancy was one big rollercoaster of emotions my whole pregnancy I had sever bleeding that lead to multiple trips to the ER. I was first diagnosed with placenta priva, but after a furn test they discovered that I was actually leaking amniotic fluid. I was immediately put on bed rest.
I was able to go one whole month without any major issues. During this time I had a 3D ultrasound that uncovered the fact that my placenta actually had an extra lobe.
After the ninth week of bed rest the bleeding became extreme and I was having contractions every 30 minutes. They admitted me to Good Sam’s high risk unit for the remainder of my pregnancy. The first couple of days I lost so much blood that I ended up fainting on my way to the bathroom. I had a blood transfusion the following day.On July 28th – After a total of ten weeks on bed rest, I was rushed down the halls of Good Sam to deliver Parker after his heart rate dropped. Parker was born at 12:01 am. He weighed 2 pounds 1 oz. He was three months early at 26 weeks gestation.

Good Sam and Children’s Hospital
We stayed at Good Sam for two months. The stay was up and down like a roller coaster much like Lindsey’s pregnancy.
We felt somewhat prepared with a basic knowledge of typical preemie issues.
Parker had two bouts of ecoli meningitis caused from NEC. The move to Children’s Hospital was a bit of a Culture shock. We noticed that quiet, laid back atmosphere we left was gone as soon as we approached the visitor's parking garage. It's almost like visiting New York City when you're from suburban Cincinnati. There were people everywhere, varying shapes, sizes, colors and conditions of all types. The NICU is so different. It is open, bright and loud. There is quite a bit of talking, buzzing, beeping and even paging overhead. Parker will have to make some quick adjustments. Typically he likes to be left in a dark quiet place. There are 6 babies in his pod and some of them have the lungs of toddlers, boy can they scream. Even how they snuggle him in bed is different.Wednesday or Thursday he will be going to the O.R. This will be the first real test to see why he is having trouble breathing on his own. It requires a light general anesthesia and the intubation tube to be removed. The doctors will take pictures and video of his airway, vocal cords and anything else they can see then replace the breathing tube. Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun for Parker but he won’t remember anything. Additional tests will also be done on his diaphragm, some type of fluoroscopy study. Hopefully, he won’t start glowing

I will never take my "normal/boring" life for granted ever again. I used to say my life is not book worthy. I have been blessed with so many wonderful things: loving parents, supportive family and friends, an amazing spouse, two beautiful daughters and a precious little baby boy.Today the results of the MRI came back and the news was devastating. Parker's brain has suffered greatly over the past couple of months. Most of his brain did not show up on the scan. It is not what the MRI showed...it is what it didn't show. His brain also showed signs of hemorrhage. Because of the amount of damage done to Parker's brain, the doctor's believe he may never be able to breathe on his own even with the surgery.Right now the plication surgery is scheduled for Monday.
Lance and I have to make a decision whether or not to put Parker through this surgery. At this time we know we need to pray about this and make the best decision for Parker and our family. We are so thankful and feel very blessed to have the support that we have from all of our family and friends. Every moment that we have had with Parker has been an absolute blessing. The next couple of days Lance and I will be spending the majority of our time at the hospital with Parker. Thanks for all of your prayers...we have not felt alone.

October 29, 2009
Last night Lance and I prayed together. We came to a decision on our own and then took that decision to our Heavenly Father in prayer. We asked him if we were making the correct decision for Parker and for our family. I was fortunate to receive conformation right after our prayer. Lance received his conformation this morning as we were walking through the halls of the hospital. We met again with Dr. Crossman, Parker's Nurse and a Nurse Practitioner. After we discussed the results, they were able to show me pictures of Parker's MRI.Through prayer and conformation, Lance and I have decided to extubate Parker tomorrow afternoon. This is not a decision that we take lightly and we feel that tomorrow is most appropriate. Parker was due on
October 30th. He will be 40 weeks adjusted. Our families will be able to visit tomorrow during the day. In the early afternoon, Parker will receive a Priesthood blessing. After the blessing our families will be asked to leave. Lance and I will be able to have our own tender moments with our son so we can each hug and kiss him. At that time he will be extubated in our arms.I know that Heavenly Father loves us and I know that Parker will be made perfect after he passes. I know that he will be all right and not miss out on any blessings he would have received on earth.

October 30th was Parker's actual due date and we had 95 wonderful days as a family with him. Yes, some of the days were emotionally challenging. However, through the support of our friends, family and most of all our faith in Christ the burden was seemingly light. Lindsey and I are doing remarkably well at this point in the grieving process. What we have come to understand is that this process is very personal and unique to each individual. There is no right or wrong way to heal. We also understand that our friends and family have had to endure this time along with us. Please be comforted that all is well with us and our little man is in a better place. No more struggles, pain or limitations.Parker went “HOME” yesterday. Without question there were some tears, but no anxiety. Our immediate families, Aunt Barb, Uncle Barry and Uncle Clay came by to spend some quality time with us. Despite the added commotion and conversation in the room Parker slept soundly. Before our families left the hospital we had a prayer and Parker received a beautiful blessing from Ben Mizukawa. There was not a dry eye in the room….lots of tears but also lots of smiles and love.We were fortunate to have a professional photographer come by and take pictures of Lindsey, Laney, Samantha, Parker and myself. A group of photographers volunteer their time and provide the pictures at no cost to the families. We will not have these photos back for a while but will share them when they arrive. Parker was awake for a few pictures at the end and seemed to be happy. My good friend Vivek Narendran, the director of the neonatology group at University Hospital also stopped by to visit. He came by to offer condolences and support. He also said that all of the doctors met and agreed we were making the right decision for Parker. It has always and only been about what was best for Parker. Vivek also pointed out that getting the group to agree unanimously on anything was rare. The rest of the afternoon was surprisingly calm. Around 3:30 the nurses gave Parker some medicine to keep him comfortable and I picked him up out of his crib to hold him. Renee the RT, gently peeled back the layers of tape and adhesive from his little face and removed his feeding and breathing tubes. My little boy seemed not so little now. I remembered back to when he was only a third of his present size. Lindsey and I took turns holding him and almost instantly Lindsey and I could see he was gone even though his body hung on briefly. We had only imagined what we would be feeling at this point and nothing was as we expected. We were at peace and very thankful. Lindsey and I have always been on the same page and we know our lives and the lives of our families have truly been blessed. We had made plans to leave at that point but we both decided we would like to stay. Lindsey and I made a little casting of Parker's right hand and left foot. We took our time to bathe him and put him in a beautiful little outfit. We thanked the staff and finished our goodbye to Parker with lots of hugs and kisses.Walking out of the hospital for the last time a told Lindsey, "Today was a Good Day". She smiled at me and said " yes, it was"....

Bereavement
I hate the word Bereavement. The first week, I think I did great...but now the last couple of days I have been really sad. I feel like I felt when I had a one month old that never sleeps...I am tired and if someone says the wrong thing...I think I just might snap. All and all...yes we are doing okay. We are functioning.
Morning the loss of anything is hard. The loss of a job, loss of a parent, divorce, health issues and the list goes on. I have been reading several books on the grieving process and I know we have a rough road ahead of us. I spoke to one of my friends yesterday that is also grieving the loss of her little one. We had a quick chat, but it was what I needed to hear at that moment. I asked her if we will ever get over this and she said...No, but we will get through it.I am so thankful to my Father in Heaven who loves me and knows me. He has sent me all of the right people to help me through this chapter of my life. I really appreciate every ones outpouring of support, love and prayers. I am so thankful to my husband. I would not want to go through this with anyone else. I know I chose the right person to spend my life with. Big hugs-Lindsey

November 11, 2009 – Two weeks after Parker’s Passing
The first week, you feel a since of numbness and you are just going through the motions of taking care of business. It took several days to get the death certificate. When they finally received the certificate they were able to perform the cremation. My Mother was able to pick up the urn and brought it all the way to our house.I always thought that cremation was strange when I heard other people talking about it. What do they do with the urn? It doesn't seem that strange to me any more.
When the girls saw the urn for the first time they really had a hard time understanding what it was, but then when my Mother-in-law came to pick them up for music class, the first thing they said to her was..."Parker's in a jar". Right now the urn is on the mantel...I know, how cliché. I have a picture of Parker that sits next to it. It will stay there for now, but I am sure it will move around until we find the perfect spot.
After Parker’s Death we immediately started taking donations for what we called Parker’s Mirrors. We collected money on Parker’s behalf and purchased Kangaroo mirrors for both Good Samaritan and Children’s Hospitals. We had such an amazing outpouring of generosity that we had some extra funds to also purchase child size rockers for siblings to use while they are visiting with their babies.
The week before Christmas we made our deliveries to both hospitals. Lance’s Mom as well as my Mother helped us drop the mirrors and rockers off. We felt a since of reward knowing that the money was spent on something that we as parents enjoyed having when we had a baby in the NICU.

The anniversary of Parker’s birth date was hard. I should have taken the day off. I mainly stared at my computer and was not even remotely productive. Next year, I think I will go ahead and take the day off and make it a tradition to do something fun with the girls that day. Moving forward, our family is doing great. We have refocused ourselves to our true priorities.

Great Wolf Lodge
We planned a little mini vacation the same week of Laney's Kindergarten graduation. We spent an extended weekend at the Great Wolf Lodge. We enjoyed the days at the water park and the evenings at the movies and dinning at the lodge. We wore those kids out. Come Sunday we were exhausted. We had such a good time. They have it so nicely set up for families. The evening we enjoyed story time in the lobby.
